Online Intro to Calligraphy

SUMMARY

During the hour and a half program, I give a brief introduction of calligraphy, talk about different styles and where we find calligraphy out in the world. Then I go into the nitty gritty of teaching a lettering style. My favorite for introductory workshops is Blackletter because people can more easily understand how to hold the pen with straight lines than with the curves. Plus, with Blackletter, there is the excitement of writing letters that are dramatically different than what we see and read on a daily basis. The bulk of the class is spent practicing the lettering style and the last 15 minutes are spent creating a project.

This class can also be taught with the Uncial hand which is from Ireland. It is the lettering found in medieval manuscripts like the Book of Kells.

DETAILS

90-minute program, starting cost is: $175

Class size: Online, up to the library.

MATERIALS

Students will need:
*Lettering tool
*Handouts
*Several sheets of blank paper

The lettering tool will vary from library to library. This Intro to Calligraphy class does require some sort of equipment. Following are two ways I can teach it, I need guidance as to what format your library wants to do.

Below costs do not include shipping if I am purchasing the materials:

1) Materials are kept to two pencils and masking tape. Students will be instructed to tape them together to create a “broad-edge” tool. I will provide samples they can trace in order to practice. Visually, this is more challenging but an affordable way to start the learning process. Supplies students will need:
*handouts I provide digitally that will need to be printed
*two pencils
*masking tape
*ruler (helpful but can manage without)
*blank paper
*Optional: colored pencils, highlighters, markers.

2) Students will use a professional quality cartridge pen. Fortunately, this pen is very affordable. Cost can be either $10 or $14. The Pilot cartridge calligraphy pen is the only cartridge pen I recommend. For $10, the basic set includes the pen and two cartridges. For $14, the set would include the basic pen set, plus a dozen color cartridges. The product I require for this version is here:
The pen
must be the 6.0 mm size for this class. If you tell John Neal Books that purchasing multiple pens is for a class, you might be able to get a discount: The pen: https://www.johnnealbooks.com/product/pilot-parallel-pen

In-person Intro to Calligraphy

This is where I first started teaching library programs. I always love the opportunity to be on the spot and help guide in the moment.

DETAILS

90-minute program, starting cost is: $175
Materials fee: $24 for 12 students; $40 for 20 students
I provide all lettering tools, paper, handouts, samples.

In-person classes do have an additional travel fee of $0.55 per mile from my studio in North Granby, Connecticut, to the class location and back.

Class size: 12 (that number allows me to work with each student)
I can go up to 20. To go to 20, I need an assistant and the cost of the workshop increases to $250 so I can pay for another calligrapher to assist me.

Table space: In order to really understand using the broad edge calligraphy tool, I have the students work large. This means there are only two students per rectangular table. I will also need an easel.
