Over 6 classes, we are going to get into the nitty gritty of creating layouts with our calligraphy. We will practice those skills with homework assignments and activities in class.

Topics we will cover include:
Drawing guidelines: large, medium and small—using an Ames ruling guide
Centering: Getting it more precise (notice I didn’t say ‘perfect’)
The value of limits
The Power of drafts
What makes a strong design? Choosing letter size, etc
Layout and Design ideas—I’m not an artist, what can I do?
Inspiration: where it comes from, how to foster it
Strategies and Ideas for longer texts

The first two weeks, we will take a deep dive into guidelines and centering and building a foundation of skills and learning important tools that we will use throughout the 6 weeks.

Weeks 3-6, we will spend the first hour sharing homework, discussing a skill and fielding questions. The second hour we will spend 15-20 minutes talking with a guest who has a quote for a friend who is a front line worker. The class will have a chance to ask questions of our guest to get ideas and inspiration for the quote they have presented to us.

The rest of class and our homework will be to explore ideas and then create a design based on the quote and information given to us by our guest. The goal is to practice our layout skills by applying them to real project ideas. Plus, by sharing homework, we will see how that basic set of parameters can be presented in so many different ways.

We will share homework each week. Sharing is encouraged because we learn so much from each other’s work. Oftentimes we learn the most when we share our failures. No one is required to share if they are not comfortable.

Since our project each week is inspired by a front line worker, students are welcome to share a digital picture of their artwork with that front line worker. No one’s work will be shared with the front line worker unless I have permission to do so.

I realize this is a very different class format. I am happy to answer questions, don’t hesitate to call or email me.

Prerequisite: Participants must have experience with at least one calligraphic lettering style. There is very likely to be a wide range of skills and experience in this class. All levels are welcome and celebrated.
