FOR SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS

The course will introduce script lettering in the copperplate style.  We’ll use an oblique nib holder, pointed nibs, ink and gouache.  We will go through a series of exercises to develop our understanding of the Copperplate script, writing with an oblique nib holder, creating a small project as homework for each class, and drawing activities to help us develop better control with the pointed nib. Previous calligraphy experience is not required for this course.  We will also create a handmade book featuring the lettering learned in the course.

Upon registering for the Copperplate class, the recording to the first class will be sent out. After the student has completed several practice sessions (generally over the course of a week) and homework has been submitted, the next class will be emailed out to the student.

Ideally, it is best to practice for at least 15 minutes many times during the week to create that muscle memory. A long practice session once a week will not be as effective as smaller touches over many days.

SUPPLIES: As a scholarship student, you will receive a packet of handouts and all necessary supplies.

ONLINE INFORMATION

TIME: Each 2-hour class is a diverse combination of learning about the art of calligraphy, seeing samples, student lettering and creating projects. There will also be an assignment to practice the skill that was introduced. This return to lettering is a great way to create the muscle memory that is so important to calligraphy.

Each class also builds on the class before and does not repeat the same information.
