Intro to Irish Calligraphy

SUMMARY

During the hour and a half program, I give a brief introduction of calligraphy, talk about different styles and where we find calligraphy out in the world. Then I go into the nitty gritty of teaching a lettering style. The bulk of the class is spent practicing the lettering style and the last 10 minutes are spent creating a project.

Irish calligraphy, known as Uncial, is the lettering found in medieval manuscripts like the Book of Kells. This can be a fun class to offer around St. Patrick’s Day.

OPTIONS FOR THE CALLIGRAPHY PEN:
I have three different options for providing calligraphy pens to the participants. In an ideal world, it is great if participants have a calligraphy pen they can take home and continue practicing with.

Option 1) The library purchases calligraphy markers (5.0 mm size) which is about $2.50 per participant. Oftentimes, the library will allow the participants to take the markers home so they can continue to practice.

Option 2) The library purchases professional quality cartridge pens for the patrons. Some libraries keep the pens, sometimes, they give them to the participants so they can continue lettering at home. The best quality is the Pilot Parallel Pen (must be 6.0 mm size) which is about $13 a pen. This is a great calligraphy pen that is also very affordable and if treated well can last for years.

Option 3) I will provide a set of professional quality cartridge pens (Pilot Parallel Pen) that the patrons can borrow and use during the program. This materials cost is covered by the program fee. If the library allows it, students are welcome to purchase the pens (at cost) from me.
