Fun with Doodles
Two Library Programs

Starry Night and Playful Peacock
SUMMARY
These two programs celebrate the art of the doodle! As a calligrapher, I use doodles all the time in my work, so when I introduce this program, I talk with the participants about patterns and how calligraphers use them. Or, some today call it Zentangle. I’m not certified in Zentangle and won’t use that in the description. (One of the founders of Zentangle is a calligrapher.)
Can be either a 60 or 90-minute program:
Cost for 60-minute: $150
Cost for 90-minute: $175
There is an additional fee if it is recorded.
Materials fee varies based on format.
Class size:
Online, up to the library.
In-person, 20 participants.
In-person classes do have an additional travel fee of $0.55 per mile from my studio in North Granby, Connecticut, to the class location and back.
Starry Night
DETAILS
60-MINUTE PROGRAM
Fee: $150
If I am providing materials, cost is $10. Participants do not keep the pens.
Participants will create a black and white doodle art inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting, Starry Night.
Materials:
- Doodle Idea handouts created by Debby Reelitz (digital files)
- Pencil
- Writing Instrument. Pigma Graphic 1 “bullet” (NOT chisel)
Pigma offers a lot of variations. This is the specific one I prefer for students. It won’t bleed when wet. - https://www.jerrysartarama.com/pigma-micron-graphic-pens
- A nice piece of drawing paper, approximately 8×10”. A nice cotton resume paper also works well. For the Starry Night theme, the paper will be blank.
90-MINUTE PROGRAM
Fee: $175
If I am providing materials, cost is $15. Participants do not keep the pens.
Participants start by creating a black and white doodle like above, then using watercolors to add color to their project.
Materials for the 90-minute:
- Doodle Idea handouts created by Debby Reelitz (digital files)
- Writing Instrument. Pigma Graphic 1 “bullet” (NOT chisel)
Pigma offers a lot of variations. This is the specific one I prefer for students. It won’t bleed when wet.
https://www.jerrysartarama.com/pigma-micron-graphic-pens - A piece of high-quality watercolor paper. I’m a big fan of Arches Hot Press watercolor. 90 lb weight is wonderful. A full sheet of 22×30 Arches watercolor paper can be cut into 6 pieces approximately 7.5 x 10″
- Watercolor paints. Some people have these at home. Some libraries loan these out to patrons. If I am in-person teaching the workshop, I will provide several palettes.
