Online or In-person Intro to Calligraphy

SUMMARY

During the hour and a half program, I give a brief introduction of calligraphy, talk about different styles and where we find calligraphy out in the world. Then I go into the nitty gritty of teaching a lettering style. My favorite for introductory workshops is Blackletter because people can more easily understand how to hold the pen with straight lines than with the curves. Plus, with Blackletter, there is the excitement of writing letters that are dramatically different than what we see and read on a daily basis. The bulk of the class is spent practicing the lettering style and the last 10 minutes are spent creating a project.

This class can also be taught with the Uncial hand which is from Ireland. It is the lettering found in medieval manuscripts like the Book of Kells. Can be a fun class to offer around St. Patrick’s Day.

OPTIONS FOR THE CALLIGRAPHY PEN:
I have three different options for providing calligraphy pens to the participants. In order to have the appropriate handouts, when a workshop is reserved, I need to know what lettering tool the library wants the participants to be using.

Option 1) I will provide a set of professional quality cartridge pens (Pilot Parallel Pen) that the patrons can borrow and use during the program. Supply cost is: $50 total and includes the handout packet as well. If the library allows it, students are welcome to purchase the pens (at cost) from me.

Option 2) The library purchases pens for the patrons. Some libraries keep the pens, sometimes, they give them to the participants so they can continue lettering at home. The best quality is the Pilot Parallel Pen (must be 6.0 mm size) which is about $13 a pen. This is a great calligraphy pen that is also very affordable and if treated well can last for years.

3) The third option is the library purchases calligraphy markers (5.0 mm size) which is about $2.50 per participant.
