Future Calligraphers Scholarship Program
The mission of this scholarship program is to introduce young people to calligraphy. Ages have ranged from 7 years old to those in their 20’s. Since Debby Reelitz got started with calligraphy in 5th grade, she knows that young people are perfectly capable of learning calligraphy. Check out the gallery on the scholarship page for examples of student work. Because of the online format, geography is not a limiting factor. We do need to be able to ship a packet of supplies and handouts.
Learn Calligraphy
For those interested in learning calligraphy, through the Future Calligraphers Scholarship Program, the requirements are:
1) Have a brief 5-10 minute meeting with Debby on Zoom. Say hello and get to know each other. Fill out the form below to schedule a time to connect and ask questions.
2) Commit to taking the full course, 12 hours of instruction plus practice time. Calligraphy is a wonderful artform but it is not easy to learn. The letterforms are challenging and require paying close attention to instructions. A strong dose of persistence is also very helpful, which is why we need students to commit to finishing all 12 hours. We don’t want students to give up after the first couple of lessons. We need to know you are going to hang in there and keep at it. Donors have invested in students by providing all necessary supplies. All the instruction is being donated. Sticking with the whole 12 hours and practicing between each lesson is what is asked of our scholarship students.
3) Submit homework for each class. Take a picture and email pictures to Debby Reelitz to get guidance.
There are two primary paths for students to get started in the Scholarship Program.
1) Participate in a live online class
2) Take a class via recording.
2026 note: I realize that summer is a good time for students to take calligraphy classes. Due to the heavy schedule of library programs for Debby Reelitz, there is no live online summer class. To get started this summer, students are welcome to take one of two recorded introductory calligraphy classes.
1) Pointed Nib: Copperplate
For those who took the Declaration of Independence program, this builds on those skills.

2) Broad Edge Nib: Blackletter

For those scholarship students who enjoy calligraphy, have submitted homework and fully completed the class, you are encouraged to take additional classes through the scholarship program.

Can Students Continue?
We are thrilled that so many students have taken multiples classes and thanks to the generosity of this community, any student in the scholarship program is welcome to continue their study in additional programs at no cost.
While scholarship students can start in any of our introductory online programs, each summer we offer an online Calligraphy Camp as an entry into this special art form.

How the Scholarship Program Started
The events of 2020 were overwhelming for us. What emerged is a strong desire to not just teach but to reach audiences that generally don’t get the opportunity to learn calligraphy. Sometimes the roadblock is financial, sometimes lack of opportunity. This scholarship program is designed to tackle one and/or both obstacles. The goal is to improve diversity within the lettering community across race, income and age.
