Centering: Getting it more precise (notice I didn’t say ‘perfect’)

Serendipity in design & trusting the process
Hidden messages
Handling longer texts
Creating a layered background
Dramatic Ascenders and Descenders
Combining calligraphy with graphite backgrounds
Dancing Letters
Strategies for avoiding mistakes
Lettering small
Nib sharpening

Each week we will explore one to two layout ideas. A couple of the projects will span several weeks as we create layers.

Here’s another way of describing the class: I am going to present 8 different design concepts and offer many examples of each concept. In addition, I will go over basics like drawing guidelines and centering. The main focus is experimenting with various ways of presenting a text. For example, one of the concepts is hidden words. In lots of pieces that I’ve done, the design includes a word(s) that is hidden. Sometimes that hidden word is legible, sometimes it is not. Sometimes it is a texture that adds a layer to the design.

The above image is a wedding contract completed last fall. It has words in the top border designed to create texture but also meant to be seen if one slows down.
