Italic Calligraphy Class

Top photo shows the array of the extensive packet of handouts we will use during the 6 week course. The journals show the book format we are creating, the butterfly piece is a sample of my italic with simple illumination components and the “Lokah” is a sample of my italic lettering done with brush on the wall of a yoga studio, the length of the text was about 10′ long.

DESCRIPTION: This six-week course will introduce the fundamentals of the italic lettering style: branching, pen angle, letter height, capitals, and pen manipulation–all those elements that make Italic the hallmark style of calligraphy. As a means of opening the door to the vast possibilities of calligraphic design, we will write with a metal nib and progress through three sizes of nibs and letter size. We will also incorporate gold into our designs, explore numerous papers and apply basic design principles. Each class will include a project and culminate in a signature-style book.

Pre-requisite: experience with a broad-edged calligraphy tool (ie: a class in Foundational, Uncial or Blackletter).

MATERIALS: I feel very strongly that high quality materials are critical to success when learning calligraphy. Calligraphy is a challenging skill to learn and requires patience, persistence and of course, practice. The last thing a person new to calligraphy needs is inferior equipment that impedes the learning curve. That is why we will all be working with a standard set of quality equipment.

ONLINE INFORMATION

The class will be recorded and made available to students. Recordings will be available for 6 months.

TIME: Each 2-hour class is a diverse combination of learning about the art of calligraphy, seeing samples, student lettering and creating projects. There will also be a small assignment given after each class. After each class, homework is assigned to practice the skill that was introduced. This return to lettering is a great way to create the muscle memory that is so important to calligraphy.

Each class also builds on the class before and does not repeat the same information.
