This course will introduce the fundamentals of writing with a broad edge calligraphy pen. Uncial calligraphy is from Ireland and found in many historical manuscripts, including the Book of Kells and Lindisfarne Gospels. This beautiful, circular lettering is an excellent opportunity to develop basic lettering skills and gain control over the broad edge pen. We will progress through three pen sizes. Students will write with a metal nib, ink and gouache, create a finished calligraphy piece and a book that highlights the techniques learned in class.  This is an excellent class for adults and youth who wish to learn calligraphy.

New policy: Students are welcome to repeat a class they have already taken–at no charge. There is so much information given in the class that the ability to repeat and work with others offers a great opportunity to develop one’s skills.

Again, there is no cost to repeating-if a student would like to pay it forward, a donation of any size to the scholarship fund is always welcome.

MATERIALS: I feel very strongly that high quality materials are critical to success when learning calligraphy. Calligraphy is a challenging skill to learn and requires patience, persistence and of course, practice. The last thing a person new to calligraphy needs is inferior equipment that impedes the learning curve. That is why we will all be working with a standard set of quality equipment.

ONLINE INFORMATION

The class will be recorded and made available to students.

TIME: Each 2-hour class is a diverse combination of learning about the art of calligraphy, seeing samples, student lettering and creating projects. There will also be an assignment given after each class to practice the skill that was introduced. This return to lettering is a great way to create the muscle memory that is so important to calligraphy.

Each class also builds on the class before and does not repeat the same information.
